Things Fall Apart : Thinking Activity

 Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic who is regarded as the most dominant figure in modern African literature. He had  acclaimed for his unsentimental depictions of the social and psychological disorientation accompanying the imposition of Western customs and values upon traditional African society.

His first novel and magnum opus, Things Fall Apart, occupies a pivotal place in African literature and remains the most widely studied, taught and read African novel.

Things Fall Apart :-----

The novel is written in English and published in 1958. Things Fall Apart helped create the Nigerian literary renaissance of the 1960s.

The novel is about the life of Okonkwo, who was the leader of an Igbo community, from the events leading up to his banishment from the community for accidentally killing a clansman, through the seven years of his exile, to his return, and it addresses a particular problem of emergent Africa—the intrusion in the 1890s of white missionaries and colonial government into tribal Igbo society. Traditionally structured, and peppered with Igbo proverbs, it describes the simultaneous disintegration of its protagonist Okonkwo and of his village.

The novel was praised for its  realistic treatment of tribal beliefs and of psychological disintegration coincident with social unraveling and intelligent.

What is the historical context of  Things Fall Apart ?

The novel Things Fall Apart is set in the 1890s and portrays the clash between Nigeria's white colonial government and the traditional culture of the indigenous Igbo people. Achebe's novel shatters the stereotypical European portraits of native Africans.

Bulletin board is the knowledge board and creative corner of our department.  In the bulletin board we are putting creative works of the students or several information about the conference, webinars, academic activities, presentation performance and  Google classroom performance charts etc. On the white board we use to write Literary quotes

Every student has different types of skills so that the Bulletin board provides a space where every student can share their creative writing, enhancing their writing skills from observing others' works.

Here we would like to mention the things which are not being practiced because of the covid 19. This year we are not coming to the department regularly, our classes going on a virtual platform. So as we know the bulletin board committee is working in the department. All the students are at their home. So how to deal with the things ? that is the question.

We created a WhatsApp group to converse with the members and the other students. This WhatsApp group through we are informing students to share their work and other important news or anything which gives us new insight to look forward to. But whatever reason we don't get active participation of students in sharing their work. Maybe because it is just a WhatsApp group and when we are at the department then your work  pin up in the notice board and that's a different one. But as leaders we were reminding them to share their writing or other things.

When the departments are open for students then also students are free to Join online classes or offline classes. So we have to manage both sides. Whenever we leaders or members are at department we are writing quotes in the white board and sharing it in the WhatsApp group so those who are studying in an online way they can also get the everyday quotes and the information which is pin in the notice board. As Dilip Barad sir always said that the show must go on. So this is how our show is going on.

Here are some of the glimpses of the Notice board and white Board

How Covid 19 ruined our planning  ?

  • I thought we would plan an Age celebration ( students write the name of writers and works of writers belonging to a particular age, each day we would celebrate one age) in white board. But offline classes are going on with precautions of Covid 19 so we weren't able to do this celebration.

  • Because of the Covid 19 we failed to convert our Notice board to the knowledge board. ( Ravina Parmar)

  • We have a lot of things planned this year, but due to this Koro epidemic we can't do many things like we are going to celebrate a special day like Book Day, Poetry Day, World Day, Environment Day, Education Day, Hindi Days etc. . Etc. And the things we lose from the earth are some birds even in the days like Sparrow Day and Animal Day. We would plan this day celebrating on Notice board and white board with writing and drawing something.

  • And the other thing is that we also plan to celebrate the birthdays of famous writers like Charles Dickens (7th-02-1812), Virginia Woolf (25th-01-1882), Ernest Hemingway (21st-07-1899) etc. On his or her birthday we wrote his or her famous quotes on Notice board. (Sejal Solanki)

We are thankful to Dr. Dilip Barad sir for guiding us and all the students who are contributing something in the notice board.

Short Stories as a Literary Form

Short Story

A Short Story is kind of prose fiction.  A  Short Story is a Story which is short and which can be read at one sitting. There is no specific length prescribed for a short story but a short story should always be short. There are examples of a short story which may be one page long or a story which may run to a hundred or more pages. So shortness is the first essential requirement of a short story. We can define a short story as follows :

" A short story is a prose narrative requiring for half an hour to its perusal."

"A  short story is a fully developed story which is shorter than a novel and longer than a fable. It typically takes just a single sitting for reading. Short Story focuses on the incidents bigger or smaller and evokes strong feelings from its readers. A short story often has a few characters in the plot."

" An invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than plot. "

We must understand that a Short Story is not a novel on a reduced scale. It is a different literary form with different techniques of its own.  It has different requirements and characteristics.

Short Story  and Function

A short story presents one aspect of the life of a character. It could be an incident, an event, a description of a feeling, or even a simple act. A short story can also impact a reader and even inspire them. For persons who cannot read novels, enjoy reading the short stories. Moreover, in a short story, the characters also share their innermost thoughts, their motives, their feelings, their emotions, and different notions.

The short story is a crafted form in its own right. Short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components as in a novel, but typically to a lesser degree. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel or novella (a shorter novel), authors generally draw from a common pool of literary techniques.

  • William Boyd, the award-winning British author and short story writer has said:

"[short stories] seem to answer something very deep in our nature as if, for the duration of its telling, something special has been created, some essence of our experience extrapolated, some temporary sense has been made of our common, turbulent journey towards the grave and oblivion."

In the modern time we can see that the readers are more attracted towards Short Story. Because Short Story is more convenient and more natural than a novel.

Five elements of Short Story :

Character :

A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work. In short story we find that

Ex : The Green Door by O. Henry

Setting :

The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens. Authors often use descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of setting.

Ex: The Last Leaf by O. Henry

 Plot :

A plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict.

Ex : The Open Boat by Stephen Crane.

Conflict :

The conflict is a struggle between two people or things in a short story. The main character is usually on one side of the central conflict.

On the other side, the main character may struggle against another important character, against the forces of nature, against society, or even against something inside himself or herself (feelings, emotions, illness).

Ex : To Build a Fire by Jack London.

Theme :

The theme is the central idea or belief in a short story.

Ex : The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry.

✍️ Now let's us see the characteristics of a short story :

The Aim of the Short story :

The primary  aim of the story is to entertain hense it should be interesting. It's  effect should be direct.

Brevity:

A Short story should be so short that it can be read at a single sitting. Hence brevity is another characteristic of the Short story. Everything superfluous or unnecessary should be avoided. Each and every word should add to the effect of the story and further of the Short story. The art of short story writing is difficult one.

The single action :

The short story must be complete without any suggestion over- crowding. The attention must be focused on the single action. The theme is not so important in a short story as the method of telling the story.

The few events and incident :

A short story should have singleness of effect. There should be few events and incidents.

An Effective end :

The short story should have effective end. Ending should be interesting one.

Suitable atomospher :

A suitable atomospher is necessary for a short story. The story writer should be able to create such atomospher with a few strokes of his pen. The nite is struck from the first sentence.

The Sense Of An Ending by Julian Barnes

 Hello friends

Welcome to my blog, here in this blog I am talking about the novel by Julian Barnes that is The Sense Of an Ending.  It was a very interesting novel. After reading this novel I am sure you will don't have any rest at all. Because many more things in this novel are not clear at the end of the novel. So some of the paragraphs of the novel are not understable until you re-read it. This novel proclaims highly philosophical ideas.

What is the meaning of the phrase ‘Blood Money’ in Veronica’s reply email?

Veronica's mother Sarah Ford sends one letter to Tony Webster and gives him 500 pounds. When Veronica replies to Tony 's letter, she says " Blood Money ".  But Tony as usual doesn't understand the meaning of the words.  As we are in the memory of Tony Webster that's why we also don't understand the meaning and the context of the word.  Tony wrote in his vicious letter:

"Even her own mother warned me against her. If I were you, I'd check things out with Mum…Of course, you'll have to do this behind Veronica's back." Considering what Veronica eventually learned about Adrian, she no doubt  interpreted this as encouraging an affair between Adrian and her mother. Very likely, she believes that Tony did have

Adrian’s diary is willed to Tony by Sarah Ford. Why did Sarah Ford own it? Why was it in the possession of Veronica?

As we know in the last few pages that fourty year old Adrian was the son of Adrian and Veronica's mother Sarah Ford. So they both are in a relationship, that's why she owns the diary of Adrian.

Maybe Sarah sent the 500 pounds as a kind of thank you for introducing her to Adrian. This seems about the average amount of a small bequest of gratitude. Although she claims that she is "not sure  [her] own motives," she intended Tony to have Adrian's diary, which would explain the situation.

Under the circumstances, we can say that, it is perfectly understandable that Veronica would not let Tony have it.

How do you decipher the equation: b = s – v x/+ a1 or

a2 + v + a1 X s = b?

Adrian wrote two equations in his diary. Let's see what is the meaning of that equation.

b= s-v x/+a1

Baby = Sarah - Veronica × / + Adrian

This equation proclaims that Baby means young Adrian is the son of Adrian and Sarah ford without any kind of involvement of Veronica and Tony. This is a very simple interpretation.

a2 + v + a1 × s = b?

Tony + Veronica + Adrian × Sarah Ford = baby

This is a bit of  complex elucidation that requires logic to understand. It means that young Adrian is the son that came into existence because of some crucial deeds of Veronica and tony. In the letter Tony advised Adrian to meet Veronica’s mother so he falls in love with Sarah and they have a baby. As we might assume that Sarah Ford has an affair with Tony and later on with Adrian also. These all the incidents through the baby came into existence. This is how I understand the equation.

o      Was the mentally retarded middle aged ‘Adrian’, Tony’s friend who did not commit suicide and was suffering from trauma and thus gone mad, and was living with hidden identity?

This interpretation doesn't have enough evidence to think in this way. I don't find any single evidence that supports this interpretation. As we know that Adrian was a scholar in schooling. We also come to know about him in the memory of Tony Webster. Adrian was the intellectual he argued very well with his history teacher in the classroom.

Adrian had commited suicide with the rational resons.

" In

the letter he left for the coroner he had explained his reasoning: that life is a gift bestowed without anyone asking for it; that the thinking person has a philosophical duty to examine both the nature of life and the conditions it comes with; and that if this person decides to renounce the gift no one asks for, it is a moral and human duty to act on the consequences of that decision. There was practically a QED at the end. "

                  ( Julian Barnes)

But mentally retarded person is Sarah & Adrian's son, who is like this may be because of pregnency of Sarah at late age.

o   Do you see any possible reason in the suicide of Adrian Finn?

Adrian was the bright student among numbers of students.  He was the master of philosophy and logic. Often he debates with his master of history on various topics.  In classroom they also talked about the Eros and Thanatos, and suiside and many philosophical topics. The theory of existentialism might work on Adrian and perhaps he decided to return unwanted gift that is ‘life’.

o   In the light of new revelations, how do you read the character of Veronica? Instinctive, manipulative, calculating, stubborn, haughty, sacrificial, trustworthy, good Samaritan?

Veronica is Instinctive, sacrificial, trustworthy and a good Samaritan. Though here  we find two Veronica in the novel.

  •  The first image Tony created through his memory.

  • The Second part what she was doing ( behaviouring )

is not appropriate for the Veronica of the second part. We believe about Veronia whatever narrated by Tony in the first part. But when as a reader we directly come in contact with her then she is more caring, trustworthy, good samaritan, who is taking a lot of care of young Adrian. She is not calculative or stubborn, but rather more sacrificial.

What do you mean by Unreliable Narrator? Is Tony Webster classifiable as an Unreliable Narrator?

An Unreliable Narrator is an untrustworthy storyteller, most often used in narratives with a first-person point of view. The unreliable narrator is either deliberately deceptive or unintentionally misguided, forcing the reader to question their credibility as a storyteller.

Wayne Booth writes, "I have called a narrator reliable when he speaks for or acts in accordance with the norms of the work (which is to say the implied author's norms), unreliable when he does not."

In The Novel The Sense of An Ending Narrator war Tony Webster. In the first line of the novel suggest the unreliability of the narrator.

" I remember, in no particular order:"

(Julian Barnes)

Like that many times Tony tells us the things and later on he himself says that Is that exactly what happens ? This type of single question deconstructs the whole narrative.

Because we are in the memory of Tony Webster. In the second part we get more surity of narrator's unreliability. In the first part Tony only says that he had written a letter to Adrian & Veronica, but did not mention the ugliness of his letter. in part two when Veronica gives a letter to him, even he is shocked to read his own letter.
