Thinking activity And Movie Review on Hamlet

Hello readers

Welcome to my blog. This thinking activity is given  by Dr Dilip barad sir. We watched Hamlet's movie at English department, M. K. Bhavnagar university. Many diractor make movie on Shakespeare's Hamlet. This movie is diracted by  Kenneth brenagh, also who had played a lead role of Hamlet. Kenneth brenagh was known for this type of literary movies.

  •    " Post- viewing task" :

How faithfulis the movie to the original play ?

I think Kenneth Brenagh's Hamlet is totally faithful with Shekaspeare's Hamlet. Each and every scene , dialogue and character we find in Brenagh's Hamlet related to original text. Hamlet is the great play by Shakespeare, that's why many director make film on this text.  Many director are cutting the scene, and sometimes not followed same dialogue pattern as make by author. In movie some of the character not speak as much as dialogue that written by author,so that's why Character loose their charm. But in Kenneth Brenagh's Hamlet we find that every character and scene as in original text, totally related to Shakespeare 's Hamlet.

After watching the movie have your perseption about play, characters or situation changed ?

We read the book and after watching the movie that gives us better understanding of the text. After watching Hamlet movie my perseption was changed about some of the situation and character.  Before watching the movie ,I am not clear about some situation and character, what is exactly going on character's mind. Specially Gertrude's character many dialogue, I can not understand  clearly so watching movie is worthful for me. After watching the movie all misconception about text, is clear.

Do you feel ' aesthetic delight' while watching the movie ? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no, can you explain with reason ?

Yes , I feel 'aesthetic delight' while watching the movie.  Beginning of the movie we see the huge statue of King Hamlet and welath of Denmark give us aesthetic delight.

This picture shows wealth of Denmark. In the  scene play within the play  ,I feel aesthetic delight. Which way Hamlet guide them, Hamlet's intention is clear to watch Claudius expression . In this scene people of Denmark enjoyed a lot.

Do you feel 'catharsis' while or after watching movie ? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no , can you explain with reason ?

Yes , I feel catharsis while watching the movie . In  Kenneth Brenagh's Hamlet we feel Catharsis in many scene and situation. Many scene is there but I mostly effect by scene of Ophelia's madness.

When we look for Ophelia's character ,I feel pity for her. She is very beautiful lady with good and kind heart. She loves Hamlet, there is no fault of her. Hamlet's behaviour towards Ophelia is changed ,he talk with cruelly. In the nuneri scene we find that situation.

Does screening of movie help you to better understanding of the play ?

Watching the movie help us to better nnderstanding to the original text. Reading of the book gives us information. But we see the movie then and then we understand the background of the ara , what is going on in background that all the things we understand here. In watching  movie we understand clearly what is the play.

Was there any particular scene  or moment in the movie  that you cheroch lifetime ?

The last scene of movie , when main character fight with each other this scene is cherished me. Because there is situation like ' બેના ઝગડામાં ત્રીજો ફાવે' .  There is a situation like this proverb, clodiuse and Hamlet fight with each other and kill by one other. That's fight help to fortinbras. Without any affart who won the kingdom. That scene through we get message.  That scene cherished me a lot.

If you are director what changes would you like to make in the remaking of movie on Shakespeare's Hamlet ?

This movie is directed by famous director Kenneth Brenagh who  was the famous director. If  I directed this movie then I  would like to change the some of the part.
In the last we find that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are death. In  one sentence we find this news ,no one who care about those two characters. I would like to shows his death in movie. Because that two chatachar represent the middle class people.

In the beginning of the movie camera roll over the statue of the king Hamlet outside the Elsinore castle. The movie ends with the similar sequence where in the statue of the king Hamlet is hammered down to the dust. What sort of  symbolism do you read in this ?

In Kenneth Brenagh's movie we find that good camera work. In the opening and ending scene symbolised alot about  moral message. In opening scene we find that statue of the king Hamlet. It shows great empire of Denmark. And in last  we see that similar sequence where the statue of King Hamlet is hammered down to the dust. This ending scene symbolised many things like that.
- Great empire broke down because of the revenge.
- Because fortinbras become king
- King Hamlet 's vision  to take revenge is not good.

While studying the play through movie ,which approach do you find more appliable to play ? Why? Give reason with illustration.

I think Moral and philosophical approach  is more applicable to this play. Other approaches also appliable but this one is more appropriate. This approach more appropriate because  Hamlet, main character of the play feel moraly down. He was the student of philosophy that's why every situation he applied his philosophical view.

Thank you.....

Girish karnad: Controversial obituaries

Girish karnad was the famous writer, film actor, director and playwright. When one person got a success then People talk about his possitive and negative points. Exactly same happened with Girish karnad.

After his death people tweet and talk about his life and people like
Sandeep Balakrishana said that:

Girish karnad was a “outstanding political pamphleteer, artful dodger, fine actor, a mediocre director, and a terrible playwright.” So look for ' what kind of man he actually was, away from the stardom'.

He was known for his different thinking and his strong belief. He won the many awards for his play. He opposite with our prime minister and remarks that he was dengerous man.He was publicly allow the cow slaughter , this way he was Hindu hater. Many time he was opposite with Hindu rituals.         "Me to urban naxal"

So ,we can say that one who write greatly that can't greatly effect on people and not good at all.

Metaphysical poetry

Welcome readers!

This blog is about charactristic of Metaphysical poetry and critical analysis of John Donne's poetry. This task given by Dr. Dilip barad sir, here is my answer:

                  # Metaphysical poetry #

In the first half of 17th century, a group of poet's emerged. Who's poetry is known as "Metaphysical poetry". Since John Donne was the pioneer of this group, it is also  known as the school of Donne.

The term " Metaphysical poetry" was coined by the critic Samuel Johnson . In his  Biographical work  The Lives , writing about " the life of Cowley" Dr. Johnson finds the following features in the Metaphysical poetry .

1. Charactristic Metaphysical poetry with explanation of a few Metaphysical poetry written by John Donne as well as any other Metaphysical poet.
  • Characteristics and example:

  •    Conscious attempt:
Metaphysical poets made a conscious attempt to differ in the style of writing poetry from the former poets they were not willing to continue writing poetry in the same manner just like Shakespeare, Marlowe, spenser, Philip Sidney and others. They wanted to make their poetry look different from the former poets. It was a conscious attempt to part with the existing style of writing poetry and to cultivate a new style.

  • Far fetched images:
Second characteristics of Metaphysical poetry is far fetched images. One of the major features of Metaphysical poetry. Metaphysical poet never tried to use and express their  images from that field with which the theme of their poetry was concerned. They tried to bring their images from those fields which had nothing to do with  the theme of their poetrys, so they are called far fetched images

Metaphysical poet tried to bring their images from the branches and areas just like Agreeculture, Mechanical engineering, Architecture, Biology, Geometry and many other fields.

John Donne , who had used many far fetched images for example his poem,

                          " The flea"
In this poem Donne shows his love though insect flea :

" O stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost , yea, more than married    are
This flea is you and I  and this our
married bed . And marriage temple is ".

                      " The Sun Rising"

In this poem " The Sun Rising" which is an image of the field of Astronomy is utilised here  for the theme of love one  mare is which belongs to field of Chamistry - " alchemic"  had been used here  for  the expression of love . The lover wants to say the this he considered wealth nothing but a chamical a coin made of some liquid metal. It reflects Donne's knowledge about Chamistry. Poetry line is:

 " She's all states, and all princes I;
             Nothing else is ;
Princes do but play us; compared to this,
All honour's mimic , all wealth alchemy".

George Herbert borrowed imaged from agreecAgreec and Mechanical engineering the best example are:
             -" The church porach"
             - " The pully"

Andrew Marwell used gomatrical and Agreeculture images  the best example is:

             -" To his coy Mistress"

  • Samuel Johnson has one remarkable comments to passed on the poetry of the Metaphysicals. The comment is :

" Their poetry stood trial of their finger but not of their ear"

The  meaning is they remain successful in displaying their scholarship . But they failed in giving  rhythm and music to their poetry.

2.Write critical analysis of Metaphysical poetry of poets other than John Donne.

In English history many Metaphysical poet like that:

  •   John Donne
  • Andrew Marwell
  • George Herbert
  • Cowley
Critical analysis of John Donne's poems:

" Death be not proud"

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill mee.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

This poem is addressed to Death. Holy sonnet 10 'Death be not proud' is a very popular holy sonnet of John Donne . The present  sonnet is addressed by the poet to death  itself the attempt of the poet is do nullify fear of death by  writing fourteen lines on death.

"The Dream":

The poem ' The Dream' considered as poem of camparison between life and dream and life  in reality through this poem the poet wants to convey that life in reality  can never be so much interesting and joyful as life in dream and fantacy.

"Sweetest love I do not go"

This poem is about death in love . The poet here wants to convey that those who love never die. Physical death is no death at all in love there can only on type of death in  love that is saparation. In first stanza of the poem he tries to assure that he is going away from her not because he  his tried of her or becsbec he has got a better campanion.

" The Ecstasy"

This poem is about abstract experience of oneness  in sublime love. The poet here wants to explain significance of both body to soul and back to body the reading of this ppep maked it clear that John Donne must have gone through the Geeta because there is an overtone of the Geeta in the present poem.

The poem is not about the physical discretion but material discretion in love. It is a poem about  spiritual discription in love . The lover and his beloved are together.

In this poem the word ' pregnant' from Biological image,

Another word is 'cemented' from civil engineering image,

 Thank you!

Vinod Joshi's sairandhri

Welcome readers!

This blog is about Vinod Joshi's "sairandhri". Vinod Joshi talk on sairandhri with Zelam hardikin SBS radio. This blog is response to Dr. Dilip barad sir's blog, click here to listen interview.

                            Vinod Joshi

Born: 13 August 1955 ( Gujarat, India)

Joshi is critically acclaimed in Gujarati literature for elegant Female sensibility in the sounds rhymes and rhythms of his Geets. Motifs in his poetry include intense femininity, solitude, social status, and an indefinable individuality, conveyed image of everyday reality and objects.

 Famous work:

Vinod Joshi known for his poetry and criticism.

  • Parantu: A collection of Geets (1984)
  • Shikhandi:a character from the Mahabharata (1985
  • Radio Natak:Swarup ane siddhant (1986)

  • Tundil- tandika: A form of Padyavarta a Gujarati medieval literary General(1987)

  • Zalar babe zoothadi:A collection of poems (1991
  • Sairandhri (2018)

About Sairandhri:

Sairandhri, a metrical poem composed in prabandha from with seven cantos,49 chapter and 1800 lines . It is based on Draupadi, one of the character of Hindu epic Mahabharata and depicts a distinct world of Draupadi's thoughts feelings as a woman during her exile using various meters, chopai and Dohra.

Vinod Joshi with Zelam hardik in SBS radio. Talk on Vinod Joshi's latest poem written in Australia that is Sairandhri. The interview start with Vinod Joshi's famous line:
          "આપી આપીને તમે પીંછું આપો,
           સજન પાંખો આપો તો અમે આવીએ."

Then Vinod Joshi tells about his work "Sairandhri " that is based on Mahabharata's viratparva ,in which Draupadi hide herself in a servent. In reality she is queen and many other name for her like that Agnikanya, Tejsavini, Krushna,Panchali. But Vinod Joshi said that :

         " મારી સૈરેનદ્રી મહાભારતથી જુદી છે"

That means Vinod Joshi try to portrayed different look of Draupadi. Mahabharata's writer not portrayed Draupadi in this way. So there is different message for people. That's why Vinod Joshi said that:

મારે મુળ કથાનકથી જુદી વાત કરવી હોય તો જ હું સૈરેનદ્રી લખું ને ?

This poem's main theme is"Loss of identity". She hide her real self from others even pandava also. So  one who can hide real self and live other way that is the big problem which way she suffer for hide her emotions, her thoughts and  power as queen. Here Vinod Joshi convey different kind of message. Our day to day life we hide  are real self and behaviour. And live life for others expectations. Vinod Joshi said that this poem is about  only ' Woman' not Draupadi and Others.

Here two character suffer for their identity. Vinod Joshi's Sairandhri fall in love with Karna,in Mahabharata different plot. Many times woman  lost her real identity  for his family. I think the basic concept of the poem is:

"પ્રગટ થાય છે એ કોણ અને આપણી અંદર કોણ છે, એ બહુ જ મોટો કોયડો છે".

Thank you !

Post-truth: Sunday reading task

Hello readers,

Welcome to my blog. This blog is about the word "post-truth" the word of the year 2016 . So here I would like to discuss about the word post-truth with example. Which way this word occurred and which context people used this word . Let's know it,

Post- truth: The word of the year 2016

  • What is the meaning of The word "Post- truth":

This word "Post-truth"is selected by Oxford dictionary in the year 2016. Meaning of the word is
" Relating to or denoting circumstances in which adjective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal beliefs".

Which way we think about specific events or any tradition in which way we include reality and truth of the event or people just think about their beliefs and opinion. The reality is lost by post - truth,No one speak about reality but people think their own beliefs and personal opinions.

And also the case of "Post" proficient doesn't mean "after" so much as it implies an atmosphere in which a nation is irrelevant.

  • Example:

Now a time we see are news channel make this type of news , related to people's personal opinions and beliefs. They not tell exactly the real news and events , but in way they present the news  that though we easily convinced by them. And one Important thing is real truth  became fake news.
For example in India revoked 370 article and 35(a). Many news channels are said that revoked 370 article is new opportunity for Kashmiri people ,job opportunity, ST,SC and OBC people have special rightsthat all the things is right But that all the things give them real happiness or not that is the question.
All India said that this new step is good for Kashmiri people but in reality that is good for them or not ? In real sence Kashmiri people happy with that or not ?

So this type of many post -truth in our society. I think we developed the vision to see things as they really are. Here one picture though find the way:

Thank you so much

Lecture on Metaphysical poetry

                  Metaphysical   poetry

                                   By

                         R. K. Mandaliya

On the 16th to 18th August 2019 , we have  very thoughtful lectures by R.K. Mandaliya from S.P. University, Anand at English department , M. K. Bhavnagar university. So this three days ,we truly enjoyed a lot and gain a lot.

First day:

In the  first session floral welcome and Mandaliya sir's introduction by Dilip barad sir. Then Mandalia sir started the lecture on 'Metaphysical poetry'. First of all sir said that we should know the exact meaning of Metaphysical poetry. Sir discuss about what is Metaphysical poetry and which is the main features of the poetry. Dr. Samuel Johnson was first used this word " Metaphysical" in his work The lives for this different kind of poetry. This word used in a negative sence but now time that became appraisal. Sir also discussed about Metaphysical poetry's pioneer John Donne  and his poetry:

  1) "The Sun Rising"

'The Sun Rising' is well known poem by John Donne it is addressed to the sun by lover who is in the company of his beloved. Sir discussed this poem very interestingly. Sir gives many examples to explain his thoughts and his thinking.

  2) "Death be not proud"

This poem is about Death. Sir biscribed this poem very beautifully. Death is the only thing that through we get the rest in our life. To explain this poem sir give the reference of Kamala Das' s poem "Spoiling the name".

  • As sir says that in his lectures cinema association with literature, so movies gives us a new vision to life and also help to understand situation in better way.  Sir suggest many movies to watch, one of is " Jagate Raho" .This movie known as black humour and also moral satire, related to Charly Chaplin's Time Machine.

Second  Day:

In the second day we learnt three poems by John Donne that is:

  •     'The flea'
  •     'The Dream'
  •     ' Sweetest Love I  do not go'
' The Flea' is the biological image in this poem. The small insect through lover expressed his love for beloved. So in the whole poem lover who tried to canvince her not to refused his love for her.

In discussion of the poem 'The Dream' Mandaliya sir mention that ' Phantasy is better than reality , because in real life we not feel enjoyment as like phantasy'. If Phantasy give us a joy then that is ok. That thing we find in following poem's line :
" True joys at best are dreams".

''Sweetest love I do not go"   this poem addressed to his lover and is about death in love. Sir explain with many classic movie's example and some of the based on real life example. So easily  we can understand the exact meaning of the poetry.

Third Day:

In the last day of our lecture we learnt one poem that is ' The Ecstasy' obviously written by John Donne. In this poem we find that remarkable use of  simile, the poem start with :
"Where, Like a pillow on a bad,
A pregnant bank swell'd up, to rest
             The violst's reclining head,
sat we two , one another 's best."

So the word 'like' shows simile. As  Mandaliya sir said that many ideas Of the poem  like taken from The Geeta. Not sure but may be who had read the Geeta and then wrote this poem ,we find that over time of the Geeta.

  • So we really enjoyed this three days lectures with Mandaliya sir, and I truly like his teaching style with simple language, easily explained difficult thing, using humour. His pronunciation is very clear that I like. Also sir have given idea how to prepare for NET examination.

So, thank you Dilip barad sir for arranging this kind of fruitful lecture. And special thank you to R. K. Mandaliya sir for  spend your valuable time with us.

Dr. Faustus : Movie Review and Thinking Activity

Here is my answer on Dr Fustus' s thinking activity:

1)  The play director by Matthew Dunster for Globe theatre ends with this scene ( see the image of Lucifer). What does it signify?

Lucifer is the prince of devils, the rural of  hell and Mephastophilis' s master. This image through we find that the devil Lucifer became more powerful than the god. This image through we can say that time is changed not god always win but now time devil also have great Voice and became ruler on world. God has not provided all knowledge that's why Dr.Fauatus call devil Lucifer, and Lucifer gave every power that Faustus wants. Two big wings showed his vitality and greatness.
In the last scene Lucifer satisfied for Faustus's soul that through he increase his empire. He feels happy in last moment in the play , he wait for this moment from last four and twenty years. That year Lucifer provide everything than that passion and work get success. So, that is the real happiness of Lucifer showed in this image.

2) Is God present in the play? If yes where and how? If no why?

No, In this play we not find that God  because If god is there  than Faustus's life never end with tregic  and cruelty. As we say that God is Very kind," if we make any crime and then repent for this crime then god forgive us." But in this play Faustus repent a lot in the last , god not forgive him. In the whole play we not find that God's presence.  God is also left out of the action of the drama, because the actions and evil doing  of  Faustus and the demons involved are not under  the direct influence of God as make or designer. Even Faustus's mind also not presence of God. So I think in this play we not find that God's presence.

3)  What  reading and interpretation can be given to this image with  reference to central theme of the play Dr. Faustus ?

This image is about Daedalus and son Icarus , Icarus is  the son of  the master craftsman Daedalus , the creator of the labyrinth. Icarus and his father attempt to escape from Crete by the wings, his  father constructed from features and wax. Icarus's father warns him Frist of complacency and then of  hubris asking  that  he fly neither too law and nor too high, so the sea's dampness  would not clog his wings and nor sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignored his father's instructions not to fly to close to  the son. When the wax in his wings melted he trumbled out of the sky and felt into the sea when he drowned sparking the idioms  " don't fly too  close to the  sun".

This tragic theme we find in this play Dr. Faustus, the main character Faustus who wants to know everything ,get knowledge of every field. When people want more and more that can be anything then that is bad thing. And we bring our end ourselfe. His more covetousness  to get knowledge became bad for him.

4) How do you interpret this printing ?

This printing by Piter Bruegel. In which we see that beautiful landscape and fine sea, but in which merely people  saw the downfall of one man in the sea. That showed the Myth of Icarus . That we see in parifary not in central like  question 3 , image shows fall in central. Here important thing is which we look at the image , which way we connect the things.

Here we connect the image with Dr. Faustus's fall down.when great man fall down badly then that is effect on entire society.

5)  Read this article  by  Bhagat Singh. In  light of the argument  made  by  Bhagat Singh  in  this article. Can you  re- write last monologue of  Dr. Faustus?

When we campare  last monologue's Faustus with the great freedom fighter Bhagatsingh , then we find that totally different and contrast with one another. In last monologue Faustus  totally down in his pride. In early play Faustus  not remember god at  one time, but in the last we see that  Faustus many time pray to God and also said to natural element  " save me". If we imagine Bhagatsingh in last monologue of the Dr. Faustus then we not feel catharsis like we feel in Faustus, because Bhagatsingh was  not repent like  Faustus. He was happy with his deeds wether it is bad or good. If Bhagatsingh in situation of Faustus then he not called god and natural elements to save him. He don't feel repent at all like Faustus . He was ready for anything.

6) Summaries articles  discussed in the class.

  •      Marlowe and God: tragic theology of Dr. faustus
This article written by  Robert Ornstein. In this  article ornatein discuss about Marlowe's great play Dr. Faustus. In which we find that  Marlowe's and Elizabethan many drama is different one . In Dr Faustus markedly superior only in the representation as portrayed in the 1604 quarto 1616 quarto adds only  the Faustbook, sure instinct for dramatic design , narrative failing. He discussed Tamburlaine' s dying acens fury. He also talked about Marlowe's writing style in Dr. Faustus and other work. Marlowe's free thinking is  evident in almost all of his art.

  • Myth psychology and Marlowe's Dr. Faustus
In this essay is written by Kenneth L. Golden. In the opening we find that Harry Levin in The  overreacher is correct in comparing Marlowe to Goethe.
According to Jung , the death of meaning in the mythic symbols of Christianity was beginning  during the Renaissance, Reformation period , the ageof Dr. Faustus. In this article we find that many dialogue from play Dr. Faustus like" I think hell's a fable".And also one another  concept is like myth and psychology ,in which one thing is
       This word" damantion" terrifies  not
        me,
For I confound hell in Elysium.
My ghost be will the old philosopher!
The play's clear emphasis of  the presence of these confused attitudes indicates their importance to the Faustian psychology. So this article we get the idea that which way myth is used by Marlowe.
