Matthew Arnold : Characteristic of good poetry and Criticism

Hello readers,

Welcome to my blog. This blog is  part of thinking activity that is given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir. Here i am going to write about Matthew Arnold and his view about good poem and criticism. So first of all we have to know about who is Matthew Arnold.

  • Matthew Arnold ( 1822- 1888) :

Matthew Arnold was the English poet and literary critic. He was the son of the prominent English headmaster Thomas Arnold. Matthew Arnold belongs to Victorian era.  If we look at his literary career then we find that he himself divided in his work in three parts :
                    1) poetical,
                    2) critical,
                    3) Practical.

Study of poetry :

According to Matthew Arnold Poetry is a criticism of life under the conditions fixed for such a criticism by the laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty". He Said that poetry should be criticism of the life. And also Matthew Arnold said that poetry interpret life in two ways :

First is  the choice of excellence action. The poet who is appeal to great primary human feelings in permanently in the time.

Another thing is grand style - the perfection of form , choice of words drawing it's force directly form the matter which it conveys.

His touchstone method :

In the touchstone method he condemns the French critic Vitet, who had eloquent words of praise for the epic poem Chanson de Roland by Turoldus, saying that was superior to Homer's Iliad. Arnold's theory that in order to judge a poet's work properly. According to him critic should compare it to passage taken  from the works of great master of poetry and that these passages should be applied as touchstone to other poetry. And also he added that a single line or a passage should be applied as touchstone to other Poetry. He said ' short passage and single line will serve our turn quite sufficiently.

He also talked about many author's poetry like Chaucer, Robert Burns, Dryden and Pope.

According to him the Chaucer, Dryden, Pope and Shelley fall short of the best because they lack " highness seriousness". And also included the best and ideal poet are Homer, Sophocles in the ancient world. Dante, Milton  moderns Wordsworth. He also mentioned that he likes word not for his poetry but for his " criticism of life ".

And also he wants to talk about fallacy and judgement. There are two types of fallacy that is Historical fallacy and other is personal fallacy.  That is all about Matthew Arnold's view on Poetry and the criticism of life.

Thank you......
