1. Write brief note on the views of Wordsworth and Coleridge on poem.

  • Wordsworth' s view on "Poem" :
Wordsworth (7 April 1770 - 23 April 1850) was famous for his Poetry and criticism. His masterpiece work "Lyrical Ballad" in which we find that his view upon poem. What is poem?

In Wordsworth's view poem should be written in' the real language of comman men'.  Wordsworth's definition of poem is

"The spontaneous overflow of feeling ,it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility".

Wordsworth think that first principles of poetry should be pleasure and so the chief duty of is provide pleasure. He was rejecting classical nation that poetry about elevated subjects and should be composed in a formal style. Wordsworth choose democratic themed the lives of ordinary man, woman, farmers, paupers and rural Poor's. He not used highly crafted poetical one.

  • Coleridge's view on "poem":
Coleridge (21 October 1772- 25 July 1834),who had written very monument critical work is contained in 24 chapter of " Biographia Literaria" , in this work we find that what is the difference between 'poem' and 'poetry' , Wordsworth's thought regarding poem and it's function fair enough for not that all the things and many more things we find that in this work.

Coleridge said that poem is the' best word in the best order'. And also he said that meter super addition of meter or rhyme does not make a poem.  In a poem ultimate end is truth and delight emerges from the whole each and every part of its composition purpose and ultimate end.

In Coleridge word a legitimate poem  is "It must be one the parts of which mutually support and explain each other all in their proportion harmonizing with, and supporting the purpose and known influence of metrical arrangement".

So in which coleriCol said that in poem not only one or other part but the entire effect, the journey of reading poem Should be pleasurable.

2. Analyze 2 poems with reference to Wordsworth and Coleridge's views.

  • Reference to Wordsworth's view:
This poem "પ્રભાત" is written by Gujarati well known poet કૃષ્ણ દવે.

"પ્રભાત"

This poem not followed all the parameters of Wordsworth but we can say that some of the things like Wordsworth's poem. In this poem poet tries to express 'rising sun'. So here we find that many natural elements like star, flower, sun, night, morning time etc:

Here we not find that too much artistic language, ssimple language and simple example. And also this poem is pleasurable one, and that showed the picture of rural life. That's why this poem is like Wordsworth's poem.

  • Reference to Coleridge's view:

Here I would like to give example of Prahlad Parekh's poem "અબોલા".

                                "અબોલા"

As Coleridge said that poem should be 'the best word in the best order'. So here  I think this poem is also in best order of word and also harmonizing with supporting the purpose and known influence of metrical arrangement. Here see that the colour of imagination.

In this poem poet's express his feelings towards beloved in a harmonious way. And also rhymes of the poem is also harmonious like  તુટી ,લૂંટી?, લૂંટી?.

So in this way this poem related to Coleridge's view.

Thank you....
