I. A. Richard : verbal analysis of the poem

Hello friends !

Here in this blog I am going to verbal analysis of Film song lyrics. As a thinking activity we have select one poem, song, devotional song or any poetic expression for verbal analysis. According to the I. A. Richard's essay on Figurative Language.

His full name is Ivor Armstrong Richard ( 26 February 1893 - 7 September 1979) . He was the English educator, literary critic and rhetorician. Who has been highly influencial in developing a new way of reading poetry that lead to the new Criticism and that also influenced some forms of reader response.

In which we find that four kinds of meaning like that :

1. Sense : sense is what is said and which is referred by writer.

2. Feeling :  feeling is referred various kind of emotions. Words express these feelings.

3. Tone :  Tone is the writer's attitude to his audience and readers.

4. Intention : Intention is the writer's aim, which may be conscious or unconscious. It refers to the effect that he tries to produce.

  • This song was taken from the Hindi movie Aradhana . This song is written by Anand Bakshi.  Song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
So let's see what kind of misunderstanding we face here. As Richard mentioned,

- Misunderstanding of the sense of poetry.
- Over literal reading.
- Defective scholarship, inappropriate metaphor.
- Difference in meaning of words in poetry and prose.

As Richard mentioned that two types of languages like Scientific language and the Emotive language. So in scientific language we find that the matter of Truth and facts.  And in Emotive language we find that the emotional things.

In this song, if we look at  the lyrics then  we not find that any Truth and facts. That is the  Emotive language because  we not find that logical arrangement.

Here in these lines we not find that any strong logic. Just the situation of mind is portrayed here.
And also some of the line is problematic like that, first problem is that  मन
means heat or mind.

 कोरा कागज़ थाये मन मेरा मेरा मेरा,

- टूटा तारा था ये मन मेराबन गया चांद होके तेरा,
- खाली दरपन था ये मन मेरा,
- सूना आंगन था जीवन मेरा.

This four line through we questioned that , how that is possible that my mind is blank page, broken star or mirror that is not possible.

- How can we write upon our mind.
- first all the mind is not a star and then the moon.
- mind is not mirror.
And also the life is not " सुना आंगन ".  So in this song we see that lover  and beloved express love towards each other. Here we interpret that lover who is like कोरा  कागज़ but who meet beloved and then he knows that what is life in reality.

Thank you...

Mary Shelley : So the first reason behind it. That lead me to write Frankenstein is that one sad occasion of the death of my first child Willy. Whom I had thoughts about restoring to life. And additionally that I belong to the era of scientific exploration and biological experimentation.

Because I would like to write about gothic fiction so in this work Frankenstein Monster play a vital role.

Jane Austen : Ok that's a great work. So what is your next plan for your work. As we know that your work is science fiction. So your following work also about genre of science fiction ?

So my next work is the last man that is based on science fiction.  And others novel like Lodore, Falkner, Mathilda.

I have also questioned of your work like you are famous as a modern novelist. How you portray your character and setting in the novel.

Jane Austen : Basically in my novel you find that setting is Bath and London. In my novel you find many characters that  is minor landed Gentry, the country clergy,  the villagers, the neighborhood and also the country town man that I noticed occasionally.

Jane Austen : In my literary career , I wrote many novels like that Sense and sensibility, Emma, Mansfield's park, Northanger Abbey etc. Also I would like to talk in Pride and Prejudice. That is the romantic story, it centres turbulent relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy. This novel has been criticised for lack of historical context.

In the title also we can find that the thing is the word pride is for Darcy and the word Prejudice is for Elizabeth Bennet.

Mary Shelley : which type of incidents and situation you mentioned in your novels? Please tell me.

Jane Austen : Specially in my novel I take a situation and incidents  that is romantic but in an ironic way. And incidents are like public and semi- public events, assemblies balls, super parties, country house gatherings.

  1.  If you are asked about Arundhati Roy what will be your answer?
If any one asked about Arundhati Roy and my answer is this, she is versatile genius. Because she worked in various fields like authorship, as an actor, screenplay writer and work for human rights etc; One of the well known Indian English authors. Her first novel is The God of Small Things.  She won the Booker Prize for this novel. In her novel we find that current problems of India. Very beautifully she discussed each and every things.

 2. If you are  asked about two novels by her what will be your answer ?

My answer is  The God of Small things and second is The Ministry of Utmost Happiness.

1. The God of Small Things :

This novel is her debut novel.  In which she talked about untouchability, social exclusion, feminism, postcolonial cosmopolitanism and childhood experiences of fraternal twins, whose lives are destroyed by the ' love laws '. And also I t throws light on some important things of life how love is always associated with sadness, how a person's childhood experiences affect his or her  perspectivism and whole life. The novel highlights the situation of women in the society.

2. The Ministry of Utmost Happiness :

This is the second novel by Arundhati Roy. Twenty year after her debut novel in 2017 she published her second novel. That is translated into 50 languages , including Urdu and Hindi.

In this novel she talked about unbearable truths of society such as wretched condition of Dalit, humiliated life of Transgender, mediocre government, rape, murder and more over the story is about the marginalized group of people. Who are victims of injustice, inequality and prejudice. The novel is the multidimensional and multi layered story. She is born in upper class family but looks at society for the viewpoint of marginalized community. She also mentioned terrorism in this novel.

3. If you are asked about her perspective towards life what will be your answer?

That is a difficult question for me to answer Arundhati Roy's perspective towards life. We can say that she expressed her life in her works. So her work through we get idea about her perspective towards life.

Thank you.....

Matthew Arnold : Characteristic of good poetry and Criticism

Hello readers,

Welcome to my blog. This blog is  part of thinking activity that is given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir. Here i am going to write about Matthew Arnold and his view about good poem and criticism. So first of all we have to know about who is Matthew Arnold.

  • Matthew Arnold ( 1822- 1888) :

Matthew Arnold was the English poet and literary critic. He was the son of the prominent English headmaster Thomas Arnold. Matthew Arnold belongs to Victorian era.  If we look at his literary career then we find that he himself divided in his work in three parts :
                    1) poetical,
                    2) critical,
                    3) Practical.

Study of poetry :

According to Matthew Arnold Poetry is a criticism of life under the conditions fixed for such a criticism by the laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty". He Said that poetry should be criticism of the life. And also Matthew Arnold said that poetry interpret life in two ways :

First is  the choice of excellence action. The poet who is appeal to great primary human feelings in permanently in the time.

Another thing is grand style - the perfection of form , choice of words drawing it's force directly form the matter which it conveys.

His touchstone method :

In the touchstone method he condemns the French critic Vitet, who had eloquent words of praise for the epic poem Chanson de Roland by Turoldus, saying that was superior to Homer's Iliad. Arnold's theory that in order to judge a poet's work properly. According to him critic should compare it to passage taken  from the works of great master of poetry and that these passages should be applied as touchstone to other poetry. And also he added that a single line or a passage should be applied as touchstone to other Poetry. He said ' short passage and single line will serve our turn quite sufficiently.

He also talked about many author's poetry like Chaucer, Robert Burns, Dryden and Pope.

According to him the Chaucer, Dryden, Pope and Shelley fall short of the best because they lack " highness seriousness". And also included the best and ideal poet are Homer, Sophocles in the ancient world. Dante, Milton  moderns Wordsworth. He also mentioned that he likes word not for his poetry but for his " criticism of life ".

And also he wants to talk about fallacy and judgement. There are two types of fallacy that is Historical fallacy and other is personal fallacy.  That is all about Matthew Arnold's view on Poetry and the criticism of life.

Thank you......

Frankenstein movie screening

Hello readers !

Welcome to my world. Here in this blog I am sharing my viewpoint on Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and the movie Frankenstein by Kenneth Branagh. Mary Shelly's work we find that the real representation of her life. As thinking activity i am giving my viewpoints.

  •  task :

1) what is the difference between novel and the movie ?

If we read the novel Frankenstein then and then we find the difference between novel and movie. So the essential part is to read a novel. If we look for major difference  then we can say that in novel Shelly don't introduce lady Monster. But in the movie Kenneth Branagh introduce lady Monster as a character. Otherwise the movie is faithful to the novel. So here we can say that the perspective of Kenneth Branagh is different from Mary Shelly. That's why he introduced new character.

2) Does the movie help you to understand narrative structure of the novel ?

Yes , definitely the movie helpful for us to understand the narrative structure of the novel.

" Images speak louder than words".

Visual media always better for understanding the exact words and things. So the movie through we clarify the narrative structure that is used by Mary Shelly. How narrative changed with particular scene and situation.

3) Do you think the movie is helpful to understand the viewpoints of different characters ?

Yes, when we see the movie is helpful to understand the viewpoints of different characters. When we read the book at that time we imagine the character and his thoughts. But in the movie we listen to the voice of character and his style and all the things. So the movie is helpful to us. How they think and how they react on other things that we find in the movie.

4) What do you think about the creation if lady monster in the novel and Elizabeth' s look of a Monster in the movie ?

In the novel we see that monster wants to a partner. With whom he spent his time. And he forced  Victor Frankenstein to make a Lady Monster. What is the importance of Lady Monster in novel. Because of Monster's misdeed Victor destroyed Lady Monster. When Monster killed Elizabeth after that  Victor try to alive Elizabeth and go through the process of Monster. Elizabeth's look is similar to the Monster. Here we can say that now time Victor don't feel fear from her. He makes monster for his loved ones that's why his perspective is change towards his second creation.

5) Think about victor's acceptance of Elizabeth and rejection of the Monster ?

Victor Frankenstein is the protagonist and narrator of the main portion of the story. He was studying in Ingolstadt. He was made a Monster. But he doesn't like his creation. He made eight foot tall, hideously ugly. Victor reject his creation. But we think for lady monster then his perspective is different. Elizabeth is beloved of him, may be that's why he likes Elizabeth's monster. He made a monster that is an experiment for him and he was not attached with him that's why he rejects the monster. And Elizabeth is the beloved of him and without her he not live life. That's why he accepted the Elizabeth.

6) Do you think the director is faithful to the Novel ?

The movie Frankenstein is directed by Kenneth Branagh. All over the novel Frankenstein is covered by him. Wec say that at some point director is faithful to novel, But we can not say that director truly faithful to novel. For example, in the novel we can not see the character of lady monster, but Kenneth Branagh came with the character.
